Chris is a skilled negotiator and draughtsman and an expert in contract law. He cut his teeth in the 1990s on commercial and resource management work before moving back to Dunedin in 1997. On joining Lucas and Lucas, he helped many people form and review family trusts, and he developed an ongoing interest in relationship property. In the 2000s, he built up the firm’s reputation for immigration work, and has any number of war stories from his time spent helping Indian nurses. More recently, Chris and Garth have developed a strategic approach to advocacy and dispute resolution which has seen the firm clock up an enviable track record. He has successfully resolved a wide range of cases about trusts and complex commercial and relationship property disputes.
Chris has four teenagers, several of whom are taller than he is. He enjoys hunting, sailing, and watching his kids play football.
Jonelle has been practising law since 1992 and joined Lucas & Lucas in 2012. Her extensive career has seen her act both as defence counsel and as a prosecutor, as counsel in many civil law cases, and as a family law advocate. More recently at Lucas & Lucas Jonelle has been practising as an estate and trust lawyer. Jonelle sees it as a privilege to provide legal advice and guidance to the executors and trustees of the estate. Her goal is to be here to listen and her skills ensure that the estate administration process goes smoothly.
Outside the office Jonelle is kept busy with her husband and two teenage sons. As a traditional busy parent she is involved with school sports and extracurricular activities, generally providing spirited encouragement.
Jeremy joined Lucas & Lucas in 2021, after practicing law in Central Otago and Nelson. Jeremy specialises in senior law and succession, and with experience in a wide range of services including conveyancing and rural irrigation. Jeremy has an easy and relatable manner, a calming presence and he enjoys providing our clients with concise legal advice in terms that are readily understandable.
Outside of the office, Jeremy’s time is focussed around family and friends, and if he’s not found pottering around his garage or playing his guitar, then he is probably hunting in the hills of Central or Northern Otago.
Simon joined the firm in 2013 after many years as a legal academic. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the law, and a keen interest in trends that determine the way legal cases are decided. Any law that’s not already stored in his memory he can quickly research, and deftly present. He also has a gift for getting an expression just right. Simon plays a key role in the firm’s litigation work, and he will often come up with incisive input, particularly in trust cases and relationship property disputes.
Simon’s amazing memory also extends to an amazing array of stories, obscure facts about history, and his love of sport. In the weekends, he follows his boys round the rugby paddock.
After over 20 years in a group growing a large law practice Garth left the world of increasing commercial specialisation to join his wife Kathryn in the practice they made Lucas and Lucas in 1995.
His big hobby is Central Otago and a historic stone house in the Knobby Range.
