Letting Your Heart Rule Your Head

There’s a song on Brian May’s 1992 solo record Back to the Light called Let Your Heart Rule Your Head.

Whether your heart should rule your head is, perhaps, something to decide on a case-by-case basis.

But when it comes to spending or investing large sums of money, calmer heads usually serve people better than excited hearts.

One of life’s inconvenient truths is that many of the most important things are also incredibly boring.

Paying bills. Doing the dishes. Mowing the lawn.

And engaging experienced professionals to carry out proper due diligence.

Most people do not know how to properly read and interpret a business’s financial records.

Most people do not know how to review a Record of Title or identify the legal issues that can affect a property.

And fair enough — these things are not easy. For the most part, they are also not especially exciting.

But they are important.

It’s important to know whether the business you are buying is actually worth what you are paying for it.

It’s important to understand what the loan documents you are signing really mean.

It’s important to know whether the “forever home” you have fallen in love with has been properly consented, whether it has legal access, or whether there are issues hidden beneath the surface.

Good due diligence is rarely glamorous. But it can save people from very expensive mistakes.
